Water-based overprint varnishes or aqueous coatings,have been in use for almost 30 years. The benefits of these coatings make them ideal, and in certain level necessary, for high-end commercial and packaging printers. This is essential postpress finish especially in current global plastic-ban situation and environmental protection trend.
The aqueous coatings have both glossy one and matte one and sometimes even semi-glossy coating. The selection of coatings depends on the coating job purpose and features.
Aqueous coating treated prints has excellent rub resistant and scuff resistant feature, can be glueable & foil stampable, non-yellowing, a very good choice for printing finish method.
Aqueous coatings get to “dry” by removal of water and ammonia from the coating solids through evaporation and through absorption into the paper, evaporation is the most important factor to dry the aqueous coatings.
Heat and air are the two main components utilized to dry the water-based coating. Because water evaporates best in contact with low humidity air and in our aqueous coating machine, there are 3 or 5 pieces of IR lamps to evaporate the coatings while there is a blower to exhaust the wet and hot air out of the machine to speed up the drying process.
A select number of aqueous coatings can be used as UV primer too. Printers who use these aqueous coatings can use their normal inks to print a job. This priming process may be necessary for Indigo press, inkjet press, hot stamping machine etc.
