What is Cold UV Curing and how to do cold UV Curing?
Wikipedia has defined UV curing as follows: UV curing (ultraviolet curing) is the process by which ultraviolet light is used to initiate a photochemical reaction that generates a crosslinked network of polymers. UV curing is adaptable to printing, coating, decorating, stereolithography, and in the assembly of a variety of products and materials. In comparison to other technologies, curing with UV energy may be considered a low temperature process, a high speed process, and is a solventless process, as cure occurs via direct polymerization rather than by evaporation. Originally introduced in the 1960s, this technology has streamlined and increased automation in many industries in the manufacturing sector.
In the process of UV curing process, the UV lamps produce heat and the temperature can reach very high inside the sealed UV lamp house. This is the reason why the UV lamp house need water-cooling system or air-cooling system in UV curing process.
Why does the market need cold UV curing in printing or coating?
The thermally sensitive material such as the labels or films will be deformed under high temperature then cause damage or printing accuracy issues to the materials.
Cold UV curing solution is not that the UV lamp doesn’t produce heat but a solution to control the temperature to a low level that the material stands.
There are four factors to lower down the temperature:
- Aluminium reflector: It will reflect more than 95% of UV rays back onto the treated media while absorb some heat(IR).
- Heat filter: the laminated quartz glass will let the UV rays go through it while keep most of heat inside the lamp house.
- Cooling system: circulated water or air will carry the heat out of the lamp house and keep it under certain temperature.
- Shutter: the shutter is closed as soon as the machine stops or emergency stops to protect the media by keeping the heat from going directly onto media.
With above measurements, the cold UV curing system can keep the media under 25℃.
We provide Cold UV Curing Lamp Houses (CLH) for different sizes of UV coating machines and we also supply cold UV Curing lamp house for offset press/flexo press/label printers etc.
